The next chapter in Black Diamond Equipment’s 50-plus year history began when Black Diamond Equipment Asia, a wholly owned subsidiary of Black Diamond Equipment, was established in southeast China’s Zhuhai Free Trade Zone on January 12, 2006. BD Asia’s focus is to help BD continue to design, manufacture and distribute the most innovative climbing and freeride ski equipment in the world. Specifically, BD Asia employees work closely with their counterparts in the U.S. on the sourcing, development, manufacture, testing and distribution of BD product. Additionally, BD Asia’s staff joins up with distributors, retailers, outdoor organizations and media in Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan to serve climbers and skiers throughout the region. BD is the first climbing and freeride ski company to establish its own full-spectrum operational facility in China. Doing so is consistent with BD’s “Made in Black Diamond” vision, which relies on employees’ skill sets and efficiencies in the United States, Europe and Asia to design, develop, build and test our innovative line of climbing and freeride ski gear.

The standards that we apply to BD Asia are identical to those that we apply to our Salt Lake City workshop: We pull test each piece of gear to half its rated strength at our Salt Lake City workshop; we do the same at BD Asia. Several units from each manufacturing batch are tested to destruction in our Salt Lake City facility; again, the process is identical at BD Asia. We rely on thoroughly documented systems and procedures to ensure the consistent quality and safety of every piece of gear we put our name on—we use those same systems and procedures at BD Asia.
