BD athlete Chloé Graftiaux killed while descending Mount Blanc
On Saturday August 21, Black Diamond athlete Chloé Graftiaux died in a fall while descending from the summit along the South Face of Aiguille Noire de Peuterey in the Mont Blanc massif. A loose block was the cause of her fatal fall on the descent route. Chloe, who hailed from Belgium and was one of Europe’s top all-around climbers, was 23.

Most widely known for her competition climbing, Chloé won the Vail, Colorado and Sheffield, England stops of the Bouldering World Cup this year, ending up in third place overall. Chloe was also an accomplished ice climber, with World Cup wins as well as ascents of such famed routes as Canada’s Polar Circus and Mount Blanc’s Super Couloir on her résumé. A dedicated skier as well, Chloé pursued everything she did with passion and excellence.
Chloé’s sudden passing has been a shocking and painful one for all of us here at Black Diamond. She had a whole life of climbing ahead of her—she left us far, far too early. We will remember her beautiful smile, bright, excited eyes and unending enthusiasm to climb, explore and laugh. Goodbye, Chloé. We will deeply miss you.
