How To Remove Your AvaLung Video
Salt Lake City, Utah (December 14, 2010) - Black Diamond Equipment, Ltd. has recently discovered that the intake tubing on certain 2010 AvaLung Packs may crack under extremely cold temperatures. To determine if your pack contains an AvaLung unit that is part of the recall, reference the following PO# and model combination:
Any AvaLung Pack that falls within the criteria above is part of the recall and potentially defective and contains an AvaLung unit that should be immediately returned to Black Diamond for inspection and possible replacement (anticipated replacement time is March 2011). Once inspected, the returned/replaced AvaLung unit will bear a mark confirming that the product has been inspected/fixed.
Black Diamond requests that you:
A) Print out the required return form HERE.
B) Remove the AvaLung unit from your pack and return it to Black Diamond for replacement; or

How-To Reinstall Your AvaLung Unit Video
Is there a way to tell if my Avalung is good enough to use for the rest of the season?
Unfortunately, no. Only Black Diamond staff can inspect and verify potentially recalled AvaLung units.
Why do I need to send in a Return Form?
The Return Form is required for all 2010 AvaLung Packs or their lung units that are being sent to Black Diamond to be inspected for possible inclusion in the recall because we need to know key details about the parts and/or product.
When can I expect a replacement?
At this time, we are hoping to make replacements available by the end of March 2011, but this could change. Please check www.BlackDiamondEquipment.com/AvaLungRecall for updates to the timeline.
I can't get my AvaLung unit out of my pack.
Detailed instructions for removing the lung unit are in the step-by-step video above. If you're still not able to remove the lung unit, print and fill out the required return found at the link below, send in the entire pack, and request the lung unit be removed and the pack returned without a replacement lung unit for the time being. We will keep your information on the recall list and contact you when the replacement lung units are available and either ship you the replacement lung unit or have you send your pack to be refitted with the replacement lung unit.
What is the best way to ship my recalled AvaLung unit/AvaLung Pack?
For returns/shipping instructions and/or questions on the status of your replacement, please contact Black Diamond at (801) 278-5533 or email avalung@bdel.com.

SCARPA T2X Notice (October 6, 2005)

Black Diamond announces a notification of a plastic materials problem that has been identified in the cuff of the new Men's and Women's T2X telemark ski boot. These models were sold by Black Diamond Equipment, Ltd. from September 1, 2005 through October 10, 2005.
Boot cuff samples in initial testing have produced cracking along random axes in all temperatures when flexed open in an unbuckled, non skiing position. SCARPA, Italy and Black Diamond have formulated a plan to rework the component materials and reposition new cuffs on all boots shipped out to date. This turnaround time is approximately four weeks.
The two models of T2X telemark ski boots affected by this notice are indentified by dual-color ankle cuffs and the marking "T2X" on the outside of each boot (model numbers 142045 and 142046). Repaired or replaced product can be identified by a single-color cuff.
We are requesting that you return your boots to an authorized Black Diamond dealer or directly to our warranty department for cuff replacement. No other SCARPA ski boot models are affected by this material. We appreciate your understanding through this temporary situation. We are confident that replacement pairs can be turned around without delay, and you can continue to rely on SCARPA products for all your backcountry ski needs.
For help in identifying the product or to find the nearest authorized Black Diamond dealer, please contact Black Diamond Equipment at (801) 278-5533.

Fall O2/O3 Binding Cartridge Update (pdf) (December 23, 2003)

If you purchased a new Black Diamond O2 or O3 Telemark Binding this season, and there are no "O-Rings" on the binding cartridge assembly, disregard this notice. If there are "O-Rings" on the binding cartridge assembly please continue. To identify the location of the O-Rings, please refer to the image at left.
In isolated cases with certain boot sole sizes and lug patterns, during a waning moon, ...the end cap of the compression spring cartridge may work its way loose. To prevent this from happening in the field, we recommend you follow these instructions as a precaution.

Step 1: Apply Loctite.
Discard the existing O-rings. Apply two to four drops of supplied Loctite (either 243 or 242)onto the cap threads, evenly around the part. (See Image A) Make sure the U-spacers between the cartridge caps and the ends of the cable are still in place. PLEASE NOTE: Once Loctite 243 and 242 is applied it is no longer possible to unscrew the cartridge cap by hand, so we recommend using a Leatherman or other pliers to hold the cartridge cap while unscrewing the cartridge itself. Again, you must pull the cartridge body towards the back of the binding in order to break the initial Loctite seal.

Step 2: Reassemble.
Reattach the caps to the cartridge with finger force. Pull back on each component while twisting. (See Image B) IMPORTANT: Please ensure that the cable is evenly seated under the front risers and that the cartridges are evenly spaced from the riser. (See Image C)

Step 3: Repeat.
Repeat for the other binding, making sure that the cable lengths are evenly spaced in relation to the end of the toe plate once you have reassembled each piece. (Again, please refer to Image C) The Loctite needs about 20 minutes to set at room temperature before use (longer if cold).
Step 4: Seat Cable
Note: The cable snaps securely under the riser once a boot is flexed (Image D). If you notice that the cartridges are out of alignment (Image C), you must remove the front cable and reseat it evenly under the front riser. To remove and reseat the cable, push the cable forward through the riser so that a loop of cable will form to the side of the riser. This can be pulled out to free the cable. It's important that the cable is centered and that the cable is properly seated beneath the riser.

Locked and loaded-get back out there and experience what these bindings can really do. Thanks and have fun! Contact your local dealer with questions.

Rage Ice Tool Recall-(April 12, 2002)
LIMITED TO 300 UNITS - MANUFACTURING ORDER 1149

Salt Lake City, Utah (April 12, 2002)-Black Diamond Equipment, Ltd. in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), voluntarily announced a recall of 300 Rage Ice Tools because of a limited increase in the potential for personal injury. This recall is due to two customer returns of the shaft breaking at the grip/shaft interface.
The limited manufacturing run produced in May 2001 can be identified by the four digit date code 1149 stamped into the head of the ice tool. Tools not specifically exhibiting this date code are not being recalled-do not return tools without this date code. Android Ice Axe Leash Component Replacement Notice-(February 1, 2002)
A small percentage of Androids manufactured this season are affected by this notification. Leashes manufactured between 4/02/01 and 1/18/02 need to be replaced, and can be identified by the cuff design in conjunction with markings on the Android Clip Buckle. THESE LEASHES SHOULD NOT BE USED.

Androids shipped during this time may be prone to the Android Clip Tab moving past the rivet. The clip tab may move past the rivet head and prevent the Android Clip from properly closing and opening. If you have an Android that meets this critera, please contact your local Black Diamond Dealer, the location where you purchased the Android, or the Black Diamond Warranty department for a replacement component. Replace the Android Clip Assembly and thread the webbing as shown.

Products manufactured and shipped since 1/19/02 continue to use this cuff design but can be identified by an "l" on the bottom of the leash tab or a 4-digit date code on leash tab and do not need to have the Android Clip replaced.
Remember to check all your gear before and after each use and retire used gear when appropriate.
Superlock Inspection Notice-(April 17, 2001)

Inspect Superlock Carabiners that are identified with a four digit number on the spine that begins with a "7" (see photo below). An interference between the plastic liner and metal sleeve of the gate may prevent proper closing or locking of the gate. Please clean your carabiner thoroughly then check to ensure gate function has not been compromised over time. Clean with mild soap and water and lubricate the rivet, hinge and between the plate and metal sleeves of the locking mechanism with a lightweight oil (WD-40). If gate does not close or lock, please return the carabiner for inspection and possible replacement.
Sky Lounge Recall Notice-(June 1, 2000)
Black Diamond Equipment, Ltd, is issuing a RECALL for a small percentage of Skylounge Portaledges shipped from Black Diamond prior to March 1, 1999. The hinges on these ledges were assembled with hollow core steel rivets. Futher testing has shown that hinges using solid core steel rivets are better at withstanding severe point loading. Ledges with hollow core rivets have the potential to shear which can cause failure of the hinge. We started using solid core rivets on all ledges on March 15, 1999.

We are requesting that customers examine their Skylounge Portaledges and return those made with hollow core rivets so that we can replace them with solid core rivets. All ledges made with solid core rivets are fine. The two rivets are easily distinguishable as illustrated in the pictures below. The hollow core rivets are silver and hollow in the center. The solid core rivets are gold colored and have a pin inside the center of the rivet.
If you have a ledge built with hollow core rivets please return it to Black Diamond.
