In 1989, an important part of Black Diamond's mission statement was "to focus our tireless efforts on the protection and preservation of the wild country we depend on for solace, recreation and our business."

Today we continue to focus our tireless energy on making our products, manufacturing processes and marketing materials more sustainable. As our Black Diamond Asia facility in Zhuhai, China comes online, we see great potential to reduce the impacts of transportation as we use BD Asia to facilitate and consolidate global distribution of our products, decreasing our transportation footprint. Our multi-year packaging redesign is focused on the  radically reduction of the paper and other associated wastes that are by-products of the packaging program. Learn more about What We Do.

In addition to donating material support for local and national causes like HERA, the Access Fund, American Alpine Club and the Utah Avalanche Center, we have committed to multi-year support of the Youth Outdoor Legacy Fund, targeted purchases of backyard crags when great opportunities arise, and are proud and active members of the Conservation Alliance. Black Diamond CEO and President Peter Metcalf, ever-leading by example, famously lobbied both Utah governors and Federal legislators on behalf of keeping wilderness roadless and free of irresponsible development in 2002. As an officer of the Outdoor Industry Association and business leader, Peter has led the charge in the effort to monetize conservation efforts and effectively tie environmental concerns to the business health and vibrancy of our communities. Yes, there is much work left undone, as we can't claim to have made more than modest strides towards sustainability. However, we are committed to reducing our impacts and levering our business towards sustainability over the longterm. We recognize that we have a responsibility to be leaders not only in our approach to building innovative gear, but also as stewards of our environment.
