BD athletes Barbara Zangerl and Adam Ondra win at Melloblocco, world's largest climbing event in Italy
Black Diamond athlete Barbara Zangerl competed at Melloblocco, a massive bouldering event in Val Masino, Italy, and managed to power her way to a first place finish (as did fellow BD athlete Adam Ondra, for the Men’s division). Nice! Below is her report from the event—which once again reigned supreme as the world’s largest climbing event—as well as a video of her climbing one of the problems.

Just returned from Sardinia, right away we headed to the biggest international climbing meet, Melloblocco. Climbers traveled from 22 countries and about 10,000 people all told gathered in Val Masino. The organizers reported that all records were already broken on the second day. That makes Melloblocco 2011 the biggest climbing meet in the world! 2600 bouldering fans took part in the competition. Old and young, novices and pros spent three days on the boulders, either on the meadows of Val di Mello, at Bagni di Masino, at Remenno Rocks or in the Masino area. Of course tackling the hardest problem was the objective, too. For men and women there were eight competition boulders respectively.
With my sister Claudia I dove into the crowds for two days. The weather gave us nothing but sun and warm temperatures so nothing stood in the way of working out all day on the freshly cleaned boulders. This year there were some really beautiful and hard boulders in the mix again. The rocks were well spread over three areas. That thinned out the crowds, but there was no getting away from the flashing cameras.
On Saturday evening we met with the other Black Diamond athletes, Adam Ondra, Patxi Usobiaga, Pietro Dal Pra, Klemen Premrl and Dodo Kopold, at the BD booth and went to a giant party with great sound.
In the end, I climbed six of the eight boulders, and managed to flash three of them. So I won, together with Russian Alexandra Balakireva!
