VIDEO: BD athlete Chris Schulte pulling first ascents in southwestern Colorado
Black Diamond athlete Chris Schulte had another great fall bouldering season in 2010 with first ascents all over the state of Colorado. Below is a video and report Chris sent us about a few FAs he discovered in the southwestern corner of the state.
With fall coming to a close, and the wind picking up in northern Colorado, I headed down to a small area near Hesperus, CO. to check out some blocks I’d seen in a few years before. With the scrub oak dropping leaves, we could see an outline of a boulder through the trees, which led us to three new blocks in a tiny hidden glen, one quite high…
The sandstone is fine grained, a little sandy, and the climbing technical and powerful. Often the sequences turn out rather different than what you expect, and you can err on the side of guessing towards painfully obvious power, or several days of experimenting with “don’t-breathe” bad smears and spinal twists ‘til you find the trick. We were able to climb seven new lines from v0-v11/12 before the seasonal closure started up, barely a week after we made our discovery. A couple more high ones remain for the spring…
