Build My Own FeedBD employee Kolin Powick reports on a visit to the new Teton Ice Park
My wife, Ellen, and I headed to Grand Targhee ski resort in Wyoming last weekend for a buddy’s wedding and some skiing. And seeing as I’d been reading so much about the newly opened Teton Ice Park and would be in the neighborhood, we threw our tools and crampons in the car and hoped to get a few pitches in. I contacted the local guide who’s pouring his heart and soul into this labor of love, Christian Santelices, and he was kind enough to show us around.
Now if you’re expecting another Ouray, you’re not going to get it. But you are going to find a three-minute approach, sunny belays, a beautiful setting and a handful of pre-set-up topropes (no leading at the Teton Ice Park) on anything from Grade 2 rumbles, to short but steep mixed routes. On Sunday by 11am, there were 10-12 folks there – from beginners trying ice for their first time, to search-and-rescue veterans just getting a workout in.
Eight short pitches later we were crushed and ready for our five-hour drive home. So if you happen to be in the neighborhood and are jonesing for a quick ice-fix, go check it out – probably best to check the Teton Ice Park's website or their facebook page to get the latest on conditions, access, courses, etc.
