Black Diamond CEO Peter Metcalf has long been a proponent of using the outdoor industry's economic power in the fight for conservation. Peter resigned from the Utah Ski and Snowboard Working Group several weeks ago in response to Utah Governor Gary Herbert's recent proposed legislation, which attempts to bring 30 million acres of federally managed public land under state control. Lately he's been featured in several notable publications regarding both his personal history and the current battle to protect our natural resources. In July, he was featured in a cover story for the HIgh Country News entitled "The Hardest Climb."
"For boating, backcountry skiing, hiking and climbing, our natural resource in wild landscapes—the ones that are left," Metcalf says. "If we want to have a sustainable industry 20 years hence, we need to have these environments," Metcalf told the HIgh Country News. Download a .pdf of the HCN's feature story on Metcalf HERE.
Metcalf was also recently profiled on the outdoor blog The Adventure Journal.
"The proposed policies are dangerous not only for the vitality of Utah's vibrant active outdoor recreation industry but for tourism, biodiversity, and a healthy environment for its citizens as well. Almost as important is the dangerous precedent they would set nationally if allowed to go through here in Utah," he says.
