Introducing Camalot X4 — Coming Spring 2013
Introducing the Camalot X4—the latest addition to the gold-standard Camalot family. The Camalot X4 combines the single-stem flexibility and narrow head-width of our Camalot C3 with the four-lobe expansion range and holding power of our Camalot, making it ideal for pinned out cracks. micro-pods and horizontal slots. The Camalot X4s expansion range is unrivaled thanks to its innovative Stacked Axle that provides the smaller sizes with double-axle expansion range without enlarging the head width. An armored cable, integrated cam springs, symmetric swage and hot-forged trigger bar round out the X4's innovative features. Available Spring 2013.

I don't know what the big deal with mastercams is. I bought one and noticed that when you bend the shaft one of the lobes closes by its self. I modified the spring used as a spacer but never bought another one. Can't wait for X4's.

Late May now? Climbing trip coming up, no more time to wait... not psyched about more mastercams, but I need to double up the little ones...

Cam lobes seem to run in a wide range of hardness: Alien (soft, confident, awesome) to Mastercam (made from diamond-like material). I sure hope you guys are closer to the soft end of the scale. I'd LOVE to ditch the Mastercams...

I would love to see a side by side picture of these next to the C3 too compare head width.

Will you guys be expanding the size range of these X4s to eventually cover the same sizes as the C4s?
20 Mar 2013, 8:19PM
OK. First day of spring. When can I buy these?
1 Mar 2013, 8:51AM
Sorry Metolius, I was about to buy a set of master cams... But then I saw these! Come on now BD it's March!

Stoked. haven't heard anything about these guys in awhile though.

What is the head width on these new x4's. I see they are now listed on your sight but the tech spec's do not include this.

Any idea of an official release date? I have Christmas money to spend.
26 Dec 2012, 5:35PM
Seriously, when are these babies coming out? Im in the market for just such a cam. How long do I have to wait? Excited!
25 Dec 2012, 6:25AM
1 question only! when is spring due too your calender? christmas is over so it is spring now!!! let these out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
7 Dec 2012, 2:17PM
I can't believe "aliens" have only been mentioned once so far!

do we know how the size range stacks up against the metolious mastercams? It seems to me that is the primary competition for the X4s since both go are single stemmed flexible cams that cover the small sizes.

Do we have an actual release date or is it just some time in the spring?
22 Nov 2012, 9:55AM
They are definitely smaller than a c3 # 1 if they go down to 8.4mm that's like smaller than a 00 if you look at the tech specs. 41.2mm is in the c4 #2 range which seems really big. These things must have a huge range. I'm super stoked. I need some flexible cams on my rack. Way to go BD!

Is it Spring 2013, I've got money to spend on these babies!!!
6 Nov 2012, 4:51PM
Why are so many people asking "what size will they cover?". Isn't obvious by the colors? Red is exactly like a C3 #1 all the up up to a Green C4 size (.75). Not rocket science.....

Looks like a CCH Alien make off too me..But I have always love all of my BD cams..as well as my CCH Aliens too.

What are the strength ratings and sizes for each cam?

Looks great !
Is anyone know about the width of the head to compare it with the not-so-dead Alien ?

These look awesome, and superior to the metolious master cams. Will you be having a sweepstakes for a free set when they come out?

If you look at the drawing at 0:53 and then at 0:57 you'll see that the axles are just offset (one bigger one smaller), not double like C4's, so they would not replace cam stops like C4s where the non-rotation axle also goes through each lobe. Maybe they've worked another stop in to make them work as passive protection, but not the same way C4s do it.

These look great. Is the "stacked axle" like having dual axles in that it would eliminate the need for cam stops to prevent the dreaded "umbrella?"
10 Aug 2012, 12:00PM
@Juan @Kasper The X4s will not replace the C3s. More than likely you'll find yourself running a mixed rack of micro cams: mostly C3s and a couple of X4s for specific placements where the flexible stem will really shine. There will be six sizes, covering 8.4mm to 41.2mm. No plans for an extendable sling. Head width is not quite as narrow as the C3s.

Hey BD boys
they looks amazing, as Dee says, please a set of X4 with extended slings up to 60 cms in double loop will be useful for trad climbing in those no regular lines. What range they will cover? They replace the C3s cams or they can be used as additional gear in my rack?
I´d like one set of X4. I can not wait to test the new X4.

Looks great!
What sizes are they going to cover?
Will they replace the C3's?
Is the head-width really as small as the C3's, like it says in the text above ("...narrow head-width of our Camalot C3...") or are they just very narrow for a 4-cam unit?

As a staff member of a climbing gym that praises and preaches the Black Diamond standard to all customers, these next generation cams will be on the rack of every climber tackling the granite cracks throughout the local crag and everywhere rocks are climbed!

Is there any chance you guys could make a version of these with 60cm slings. I know its sounds crazy but for trad and Alpine climbing where the pitches all ways wander around the place and you end up have to extending your gear all the time. In the UK and Europe our trad climbing is often not following straight lines so we have to extend the gear all the time. Have a longer sling version would make life sooo much better for us. You could call it the Camalot X4 Alpine, and the Camalot X4 Crag for the short sling ones.

Awesome! Can't wait for these babies!
