This month we talked with Ski Category Director Thomas Laakso about our all-new hybrid touring ski, the Revert.
What was the design goal in creating the Revert?
The design goal for the Revert was to show that you don't need a fat ski to enjoy powder. It's the distribution of surface area, not necessarily the amount of surface area, that counts And if you are earning those powder turns, the same rockered tip and tail geometry that makes for easy soft snow performance also makes for improved uphill efficiency with reduced skin surface drag.
How is the Revert a departure from traditional skis of its size both in terms of construction and skiability?
Traditional AT skis resemble shapes that are designed for the piste. If you are out touring, you're probably hoping to score some fresh tracks, so we applied these soft snow geometries that have normally been reserved for fat skis, and applied it to narrower uphill manageable shapes.
What ski situations is the Revert ideal for?
The lightweight Revert is ideal for earning fresh tracks. The shorter contact length in this new rockered 95mm waisted ski introduces less skin drag on the way up, while that same shape has its clear benefits for ease of performance in soft snow.
Were there any unique design challenges during the development of the Revert?
Many weight minded AT skiers opt to size down in ski length to maximize uphill efficiency due to both total weight and skin drag. The Revert is a short contact length ski that benefis inherently from reduced skin drag, without the need to size down. So I think our main challenge is educating skiers that the rockered tip and tail design allows you to benefit from increased soft snow stability without having to downsize your ski length.
