BD athletes Mark Welgos and Angel Collinson podium at FWT stop in Kirkwood, CA

Black Diamond athletes Mark Welgos and Angel Collinson scored spots on the podium at the March 3-7 stop of the Freeskiing World Tour at Kirkwood, California. Collinson placed second for the women and Welgos nabbed third for the men. Awesome! Below is an email and photos Collinson sent us about her second-place finish, and below that is a GREAT video Welgos sent us of some backcountry skiing he did before the comp, as well as POV footage of his finals run.

Kirkwood was an awesome competition! The previous comp was at Crested Butte, which was a tight and technical venue with lots of rocks and trees but not a lot of snow. My style of skiing is more suited for fast and open venues, so I was ecstatic to show up to Kirkwood and see that it was a gnarly open face with a lot of different options for line choice. They had gotten dumped on the week before, so even though it was heavy, the snow was as prime as it gets and all the athletes were ready to throw down. The first day we had great weather, I felt confident and skied a pretty intense line where no other girls went. I stomped it, and it was a totally rewarding experience, putting me in 3rd place going into the next day. Day 2 was on a different part of the same face, and I had another line that I was pumped to ski. Same thing as Day 1, I felt confident and stomped it- but the day wasn’t over. I stayed in 3rd and moved into the Superfinals, so we had one more run left. After a bit of debate I picked a totally different line, one that I hadn’t inspected, but it looked fun and I wanted to ski something new. By that time clouds had rolled in and the light was pretty flat, but I went for it and skied strong. That run bumped me up to 2nd place, and put me in the lead for the overall Freeskiing World tour, tied with fellow Black Diamond athlete Jacqui Edgerly. The next comp is at my home mountain, Snowbird, so I’m stoked to go shred and see what happens!
