Although Jean-Pierre "Peewee" has touched every aspect of climbing, he considers himself to be a rock climber. His specialty is crack climbing, and that’s the type of climbing that he gets the most satisfaction from. Peewee likes everything about that style. He likes the beauty, the purity of the lines. He even likes the pain from a hard finger jam. Hard crack climbs are very rare and usually require a bit more work to access. Some of them are a pain in the ass to work…. And that, for him, adds to the experience, to the character of a climb. Peewee “collects” hard cracks from all over the world, and for him it’s like a big treasure hunt!

When did you first start climbing?
What do you most enjoy about your sport?
I like the technicality and the complexity of the movements, I like the beauty of the “lines” (especially crack climbs), I like the mind games that you have to play for a successful ascent, I like the physical effort of training.
How do you define success?
Success for me is not necessarily translated to sending. As long as I’m having fun, I consider that success. Also, learning something new, making progress on a climb, is the best form of success.
Who are your heroes?
My climbing heroes are the original crack masters…. Hidetaka Suzuki, Tony Yaniro, Steve Hong, Steve Petro, Todd Skinner. But my Number One Hero is definitely Bruce Lee. He would have been a heck of a crack climber!
What inspires you?
I’m inspired by people with talent. Climbers, athletes, artists.…
What are your hobbies outside of your sport?
I like to mess around with my guitar. I like to cook. I occasionally run, cross country ski and mountain bike.
What’s your guilty pleasure?
Double espresso and BACON! God, I love bacon!
Tell us about your most favorite place in the world:
Moab is probably the place I could live for the rest of my life. The climbing potential there is so vast…. There’s so much rock out there, it’s crazy! The weather is good, the climbing is good!
As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be like Lucky Luke. A badass cowboy!
Tell us about a time in your life when you have been scared:
I’ve been stuck in a thunderstorm on the Diamond in Colorado… I remember we could smell the electricity (ozone) in the air…. That was kind of freaky….
Describe your perfect day:
Waking up next to my girlfriend, double espresso, 12C degrees, sunny, light wind, no humidity, a good friend/climbing partner, my dog, a steep 1-inch finger crack, glass of wine….
