Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great all around crampon Purchased this set of crampons for a spring ascent of Mount Whitney and got a ton of use out of them. We would not have been able to make it up the chute without them as it had just snowed and being early may days of light thaws with cold nights had left a base of thick ice under a half foot of snow. A really solid piece of entry level equipment!!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid Performer Not much I can say that others haven't. My use has been for canyon hikes in ice/snow mix. Bindings grip well, not sliding around on boot, without the overtightening that cuts off bloodflow. Grip is solid on mixed terrain. I've even worn them into a convenience store with hard tile and only had to be a LITTLE more cautious. Keep them sharp. Tip: Use a little bit of your favorite wax on the anti-balling plates. They work great as-is, but give them a helping hand.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great crampons!!! I've owned the same set of Black Diamond Contact strap crampons since 2005 and have never had even the slightest of issues with them. These things are bulletproof. I've used them often for winter climbs of Mt. Washington, and other mountains in the White Mountain region of New Hampshire. When introducing someone new to winter climbing, these are the crampons I always recommend that they get. They are compatible with all types of winter boots and have never let me down. On a recent winter climb of Mt. Washington, these things took a beating as the conditions above tree line were mostly bare and loose rock, and the occasional ice patch. I was wearing my 2005's, and one of my friends was wearing his brand new BD's he had recently purchased. We both weigh in excess of 250 lbs. with all our gear on, and our crampons never waivered. The third in our group who easily weighed 50 lbs. less than us was wearing a popular competitors strap crampons. His flex bar broke in one of his crampons shortly after we left the summit and were on our descent back down the bare rocks above tree line. I jokingly said it was because he wasn't wearing Black Diamonds. Luckily, we were able to make it down safely. Realizing how reliable my crampons have been over the years, to the point I've almost taken them for granted, prompted me to right this review. My only complaint is that my friends brand new BD Contact strap crampons with the standard size flex bar, fit his size 10.5 boot at the max setting. I would think the larger flex bar would be needed for a size 13 or above. Size 12 and above max. Definitely not a 10.5. My 2005's fit my size 11 with a few more holes to spare. All and all these are great crampons and as long as I'm hiking mountains in the winter, these crampons will be on my feet.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for moderate slopes These crampons are great for moderate slopes, as they fit nicely on hiking boots and are easy to put on; however, I would not recommend these if you are planning on doing anything particularly steep and/or icy. 10 points are great, but use 12 points on the hard stuff.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from New Contact Crampons center flex bar size. All in all they were great to use while climbing Mt St Helens in June 2017. What a difference these made while ascending. I would highly recommend these to anyone who will be hiking up mountain snow & ice covered slopes. The only downfall was is that we had the standard center flex bar. We have size 12 hiking boots. The flex bar was just a tad bit too short for our boots. We had a few issues with them falling off until we really cranked on the straps to get them tight. But they didn't feel quite secure. Rather awkward due to the size/fit.. If ordering a pair of these crampons, I would highly recommend getting them with the "extended length flex bars" with a size 11 or larger.. I will be ordering two sets to replace these standard size flex bars before setting out on our next climb in September. Our hiking boot souls are not over sized etc. They were right at the barely fit scenario. but we managed to make do. None the less, I will have to give them a 5 star rating! Even though we had a slight misunderstanding with our sizes, I have no regrets in making this purchase, I'll give an update in the coming months. We love these crampons! This was our 1st time ever using them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Three years, hundreds of miles, many summits... I bought these three years ago. They've been to many Cascade volcano summits, across glaciers, up steep ice, on hundreds of miles of ice and snow, and even through the rocks and scree. I've sharpened them, but after all of those hard miles they barely show any other signs of wear. They are solid and stable on any stiff boot. The length adjustment is simple. The orange silicone anti-balling plates still look like new and they keep my crampons clean on days when other folks are having big problems. The harnesses and straps are holding up beautifully and they are easy to get on even in bad weather with cold fingers. I have the all-straps version, but have them on and off just about as quickly as folks with automatics. They are really great gear.
