Evac Shovel is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from GREAT! except for the handle storage I generally like and recommend this shovel. Here's why: + Great shape - flat back, nice combination of pressure focus on blade edge vs. stability - Rather curvy - it cuts a nice pit wall, but still curves back around a lot making it bulky to pack, and hard to remove. + Excellent hoe-shovel idea concept! - (and a big minus costing 5 stars) Handle gets stuck in super stowed position! I've tried lightly grinding material from the outer shaft, but when you compress past the last latch hole, the lower shaft jams up into the upper shaft and can be hard to extend!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great shovel, moves lots of snow! The big blade on this beast moves a ton of snow fast, and with the flat-back blade design it also produces nice test-pit walls. The handle/shaft seem pretty robust, comfortable to grip. And BD figured out a way around the eternal problem I've had with other shovels where the shaft fills up with snow through the pop-pin holes while I'm digging. Nice touch. My only complaint is that the shaft is long enough that it barely fits in the avy tools pocket of my BD backpack, although maybe that's more of a backpack issue than a shovel issue. Regardless, this shovel works darn well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great digging machine! I use this shovel to dig a lot on the mountain as patrol. In fact, I find reasons to dig in the snow, that's how much I like it! I've shoveled a mountain of snow and it is still going strong--no issues yet! The curve in the shaft is a little different, but fits in my bag just fine. Some folks may need to split the think into three pieces for their packs (which may take a few seconds longer to attach). The different shovel/hoe modes with the D handle make this the favorite shovel I've seen! No plastic to break when you are saving your buddies life! Fits in my 16 liter pack with probe and water.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceptional Pit Shovel This shovel is exceptional for prepping snow pits of all kinds - from pixy dust and crusts, to polar firn. The blade's leading edge cuts cleanly and the blade tracks incredibly well, making snow pit prepping fast and fun. The flat-bottomed blade leaves no vertical marks on the pit face. The 'hoe mode' makes it easy to fill in pits once your done. One caveat with this design is that the shaft's connection point protrudes further from the blade than on most shovels: this design facilitates the two shovel modes and makes it quite comfortable to use, but watch that the base of the shaft doesn't cut into the top of your stability tests and affect results. Just like other snow shovels, I wouldn't pry hard on this one (chop and lift blocks).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Design I used this shovel for the second half of last winter and was very impressed. The overall design, durability, and function of all brands of avalanche shovels has increased in recent years, but I think this one tops them. The blade is bomber and very confidence inspiring. It manages to move snow, cut clean pit walls, but also packs well. I also love the D grip - I've never had one because they always seem so bulky, but this one is compact and is so comfortable in the hand. But my favorite feature is the hoe mode. It seems gimmicky at first, but once you use it you'll never get a shovel without it. It's so much faster for hogging out pits, and I've even used it as a climbing tool booting up deep snow couloirs and chopping through cornices.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Big and great, oh, did I say BIG! I got this in the mail a few weeks ago and my only real complaint is that the huge blade doesn't fit in my older BD Shadow 45 shovel pocket easily. It's super burly and has a nice smooth backed blade to dig out clean pits if you want to. I suspect that even with a newer back that has a wider avy gear pocket, the handle will still need to be taken apart into two pieces, making it so that you have to assemble a 3 piece shovel in order to use it. All that being said, I'm pretty sure that there is no other shovel on the market that is quite this big, so I can live with it as part of my quiver of gear. This is a great shovel for people that need to move a lot of snow, but if you're going to only own one shovel for the backcountry, I'd probably go with something smaller.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Overall a pretty good tool. Robust construction. The hoe feature works well for moving lots of loose snow quickly. Still need to chop blocks in shovel mode when the snow gets hard. The handle extension lock button is a bit awkward to release with big gloves. The handle doesn't pack neatly in your pack due to the bend at the blade end. I'm getting used to those minor inconveniences. The good sized blade cuts great vertical and smooth snow profile walls.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is a solid shovel. I've used the Evac shovel to dig several snowpits. When I dig a pit, I use that opportunity to practice strategic shoveling techniques utilized in avalanche rescue. The hoe feature on this shovel combined with the "D" handle provides an excellent tool for chopping and raking snow away from the pit. No problems in standard shovel mode. This is a solid shovel.
