DescriptionDesigned to provide field-proven performance with an innovative, removable design, the Black Diamond AvaLung Element is a lightweight avalanche safety tool that significantly extends fresh air supply in the event of an avalanche burial. By pulling fresh air from the surrounding snowpack and directing exhaled CO2 out an exhaust port and away from the face, the AvaLung Element can increase usable air supply under the snow by up to four times. The unit is compatible and easy to install on any AvaLung-ready backpack, and fully removes for four-season pack usage.
- Only compatible with AvaLung-ready packs (Dawn Patrol and Cirque Series)
- Bi-valve intake box pulls air from the surrounding snowpack
- Mouthpiece delivers fresh air from valve box and expels CO2 out exhaust port
- Fully removable from pack without tools for versatile four-season use

Rated 1 out of 5 by Christian from Be wary of compatibility problems I recently ordered an Avalung Element to replace my aged one from my BD Covert 22L Avalung backpack. Manufacturer literature encourages replacement if the Avalung malfunctions (which my older one has). The description of the Element stated it would fit "ALL Avalung compatible backpacks". However be aware that this is untrue for certain BD backpacks such as the older models, like the one I have. So now I have to pay to ship back the replacement Avalung that doesn't work on my backpack. BD will not provide you a pre-paid return mailing slip if you order the Element for your older BD pack. And they also will not repair the broken Avalung in older BD Covert backpacks such as mine. Also its important to note that the newer separate Avalung Element is not nearly as well integrated into the backpacks as the previous models. The tail exhaust end merely dangles off the bottom of the shoulder strap, with a cloth wrapped tightly around it. The older models terminated in a very nice robust and secure exhale fitting mounted in the lower side of the backpack. It was bomber and foolproof. I prefer the compartments and ski carry strap set up on my older Covert backpack rather then the new BD versions that now replace them. The new ones have taken some design steps backwards in terms of offering technical functionality, durability and adjustability. I would like to see these "Covert" style packs brought back for better Avalung integration. There would be nothing worse then having the new strap-on type Avalung ripped off the pack shoulder strap in an Avalanche or exhaust end jammed in an incorrect position.
