NANOSHIELD FABRIC

NANOSHIELD™ FABRIC

Superlight Series tent canopies and bivys are constructed with NanoShield—Black Diamond’s proprietary breathable single-layer fabric. NanoShield is extremely water-resistant boasting the highest water column rating of any breathable, single-layer fabric. This is thanks to our exclusive Silicone Nanocell coating, which allows the fabric to remain light, soft and packable.

Spotlight Bivy is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from practical protection I have used this sack for multiple day ski tours in the Sierras. The big issue with most bivy sacks is condensation and this sack is reasonably good but not perfect on that account with some condensation build up but pretty limited. Yes you do have to seam seal it if your going to be in wet conditions but it's not that big of a deal and I'd rather do that myself then pay the manufacture to do it. One down side to this bag is that it is a bit tight for high loft bags and you feel a bit squeezed in as the bivy compresses your bag. The loop pole system works ok but it takes some practice to optimize its use. I've used this bivy with out staking it down but it's most efficient when used with the stakes as the loop pole system works better. Keep in mind this is essentially a big kite and will fly into the stratosphere if the wind catches it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Practical Protection I primarily use this bivy on ski tours in the Sierras where light and simple protection is a must. I've also have used it while hiking as, "just in case a thunder storm prevention". In general it works best when staked as the hoop over the head will not function well if not staked. In cold conditions you will have some condensation but this can be minimized if you allow for some venting. When not snowing I will leave it unzipped to my hip or chest. With a Winter bag and pad inside the bivy it is a tight fit but workable. If you're using this in cold snow conditions you probably don't need to seam seal this unit but if you want absolute water tight protection you must seam seal this unit by hand which ok by me as I would rather do that myself then pay more for the bivy. My only real complaint about this product is that I would really like to have about 2 more inches of width for when using my down filled Winter bag and Winter pad.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Light and easy Very light and easy to set up. Kept the mosquitoes from biting me while I slept. Has enough room to keep shoes and other items in the bivy while sleeping too.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointed Not so sure about this. Nothing in the description said this had to be staked down and also do not understand why there was a tube of something and a syringe included. Should be factory seam sealed considering the cost and competitive offerings. I wonder If I will ever use this Bivey, particularly since I have a three season tent that weighs less than 3 lbs.
