Z-Pole Rapid Deployment System

Z-Pole Rapid Deployment System

  • Concealed inner cord
  • Single push-button release to collapse the pole
  • One-pull, Speed Cone deployment

Speed Cone technology comes from our expertise in avalanche probe design—a key component of Z-Poles' stiffness and fast deployment. Simply grab the grip and the first shaft section, and pull them away from each other. The pole will snap into place and lock. Each Speed Cone guides a shaft section into place, and stiffens the joint when the pole is locked. Protective, flexible tube ends cover the pole’s Kevlar® center cord when folded.

Distance Carbon FLZ Trekking Poles - 2017 is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 25.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from BD Keeps Improving Their Trekking Poles These are super light. The long ones, which I have, weigh only 13 oz. That's a full 5 oz lighter than my BD Trail Pro's. And the difference is very noticeable. The swing-weight feels fast. They're easy and quick to deploy or pack away. So far, they seem strong enough to be reliable. My wife, Kathy, finds the grips to be slightly hard (not soft in the palm) and believes other women will too. Overall, we're both very pleased with our Distance poles. Thanks, BD. Suggestion: If you're 6 ft or taller, get the FLZ, to ensure you can lengthen your poles sufficiently to reduce impact on your joints during sustained, long, steep descents. I'm 6 ft tall and, for me, a max length of 130 cm is inadequate. 140 cm is necessary.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice but not made for snow I love that these poles are light and collapsible & easy to pack. However, I got my first pair in Oct and by January, one pole broke at the snap during a snowy winter hike. BD's customer service was great about replacing them so I was happy until my first hike (again in winter conditions) when the replacement pole also broke at the snap. BD has agreed to replace them but wrote that the poles are not made for snow, only "trekking." I guess that explains why they don't offer a larger basket. Now that I'm reading reviews, I find that this seems to be a common complaint. I think BD should make it clearer that these are not made for snow. My old BD poles have held up for eons and these were to be an upgrade. They will now be my summer/early fall poles.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Phenomenal Pair of Trekking Poles These are by far the best pair of trekking poles I have ever owned. I do a lot of extreme and long distance backpacking and hiking. These poles are super light and extremely durable, not to mention portable. I weigh 95 kg and wear an average of 20 kg in my pack. I have used my entire upper body weight when hiking Mt. San Gorgonio, and Baden Powell in So Cal, and Half Dome (the sub dome portion) in Yosemite NP with no problems. The tips are super grippy, and durable as well. I'm going to purchase a pair for my wife and kids too. I Highly recommend this product, and will purchase again if needed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love The Poles, Hate the Straps I upgraded from heavier aluminum poles to these. Honestly, after using them for a while, I no longer have concerns that I often hear about this type of pole: easy to break, the locking mechanism will fail, and the like. They have been solid performers. My only real complaint is that I hate the straps. I understand that BD was trying to keep the weight down, but the material of the strap edges digs into my skin along the outside of my thumb. It is not very soft, and the edge will start to irritate my skin after a few miles. I often end out risking losing a pole by just leaving the straps dangling, instead of threading my hand and wrist through them. If I could find something softer, such as a neoprene replacement, these trekking poles would get a five star review.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from nice but fragile I bought these poles mainly because their weight - it was the main point to spare as many grams as possible for longer trips. I was happy owner of these for about a week, until I actually started to use them. Then on my first trek with them in first hour of walk one of them broke - no I haven't bent it or fall on it or whatever - it just broke in knob area and also in place where clip lock is located, so there were two break points. Sadly I had 15 more days of hiking before me and 15kg already on my back, so I just threw off the broken one, if not I would definitely return them or at least make some photos what happened to it. Don't get me wrong I use lot of BD stuff and I'm very happy with it, but this one really didn't last long. So feel free to consider if DISTANCE is really what you want to achieve and if yes, then maybe something more sturdy should be appropriate (or maybe I was just really onlucky)

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Broke! Would not honor warranty Pole broke right before a Ultra World Tour race in Croatia. If you are depending on these as part of your kit, look elsewhere. Black Diamond would not replace the pole, even though it was just over a year old.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointing I bought this 1 year and a half ago and now they are rusty and the button are gone. The worst of all is that they have no fix.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Strong and Feather-Like I'm a baby boomer hiker who used hiking staffs for years, refusing to use poles. Finally last November, I thoroughly checked online all over for info., and narrowed down my choice of poles to Black Diamond Distance Carbon FLZ. They go with me on all hikes. I'm hard to impress, but this gadget does the job as advertised. The poles are great going up (extra push), going down (braking & balance), and in unleveled trails (may prevent falls & help maintain balance). I love them.
