Alpine Start Hoody - Men's is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love it, with one issue. I've had this jacket for a few weeks now and have worn it nearly every day. It's perfect, save for one issue—the zipper area near the stomach protrudes out quite a bit. This may be a byproduct of pairing a robust zipper with such lightweight fabric... but it also may be my height. I'm 5'8" 140lbs and own a Men's S. I don't have this issue with any other jacket that I own (I own a variety of different name brand jackets) and I normally wear S in slim fit (XS in standard fit, when available). Would try an XS if BD made one. Could stand to shave 2-3" from the length. My solution for now is to synch down the waist draw cord slightly and roll up the bottom of the jacket to eliminate the bulge. Set aside this one fit issue, I'm in love with this piece!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So close to perfect I've used and abused my Alpine Start for a couple of years now and I wear it more than just about anything else - climbing, ski touring, trail running - this is the piece most likely to come along. Fabric and features are pretty perfect, a really useful blend of breath-ability and wind resistance, and nothing you don't need. Durability has been excellent. My lone complaint is the fit in an XL. Most black diamond pieces (I own many) are built for longer, leaner body types but this piece is a bit of an anomaly - a shorter, somewhat boxy fit. Add an inch or 2 of length and reign in the hem a little and I think the alpine start would fit more in line with BD's other XLs. I'll probably still buy another one if this one ever wears out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Most versatile piece I've ever owned you can add this piece to whatever your wearing for a little wind protection without sweating out like you would adding a hardshell or thick softshell. It's so versatile I carry it bc skiing in the winter, climbing, mtn biking, basically everywhere. Just keeps that little wind chill out but wont make you sweat. Also the fabric has a little stretch so feels more comfortable than other windshirts that can feel like plastic bags

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Pocket Feature This layer is lightweight and fits easily into the front pocket for storage. As far as wind layers go, it feels a little more breathable than most without sacrificing and wind protection. You can stuff and Alpine Start Hoody into the pocket as well to add a little more insulation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Light and Right Nice addition for backcountry skiing. Light, protective and breathable. Nice active fit for Medium on 5'10" 180 lb frame. Used for up on the skin track and down through the pow. Might end of being a regular in my summer hike/bike and winter packs. Interested to see how it performs in wetter conditions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing versatility! Before getting this jacket, I struggled with my layering for backcountry skiing. Now I have a simple solution no matter the temps- a long sleeve lightweight woolie base layer plus the Alpine Start Hoody. I can skin thousands of feet and never get over-heated, and at the same time never get cold. Somehow this jacket regulates heat so well that it's perfect for aerobic activities in a wide temperature range. I wore it to Rogers Pass B.C. and started out in 2* temps., and last week wore it on a 35* day of skinning for spring corn. I wear it mountain biking, to beer with my buddies, basically everywhere. In fact last week my friend commented how I wear this jacket "everywhere", which is why I'm buying another one in another color! The jacket has minimal features, making it very light and supremely packable. LOVE the chest pocket which keeps my iPhone handy for pics. The jacket shows little to no wear after months of daily use. Rain protection is minimal, but I've found that if I'm moving uphill in light rain, the heat generated from my body quickly dries the jacket due to the extreme breathability. I have never put this jacket away wet, as it always seems to be dry, or on its way to drying out. If I manage to build up some sweat between my jacket and ski pack, I just ignore it at the top of the skin, throw my softshell on for the descent, and by the time I'm at the bottom the Alpine Start WonderHoody is dry again. Superb piece, and I'm buying another because the thought of loosing this somewhere causes a mild panic.
