Backpacker's Editors' Choice Award Review

First Light Hoody is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 25.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great puffy for most conditions This is a really great jacket i wanted to try it out in different conditions before i wrote a review, and i gotta say I've been very happy. -Very warm I've worn it in temps from 25-60 degrees and was comfortable never to hot or to cold. -Breathes well i usually have a problem overheating once i get moving but not in this jacket. -Blocks wind very well I've it in around 40kt winds and felt very little bleed through. - Sheds light precip well and did a surprisingly good job in a little heavy rain.(although i would not wear only this in prolonged rain) I'm 5'10" 190lbs (i like to lift) and the large fits well, a little loose and good for layering.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My new go to Bought this coat primarily for back country touring and have gotten out in it a few times so far. It has lived up to expectations with breathability, weight, fit, and feel. Two deep side pockets and one inside chest pocket, all with zippers, give plenty of room for snacks or your phone. Tapered wrist cuffs make sure the sleeve stays above your wrist and out of the way on change overs but isn't overly snug or uncomfortable. The relaxed but tapered fit make it ideal for almost any situation, I would definitely recommend adding this to your gear closet if your trying to fill an active-insulation layer need.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Almost an epic jacket.... I am 5'8'' and 170lbs. I purchased the medium and the fit is not ideal. This coat is definitely designed for tall and skinny folks. The coat ends up riding up my waste and bunches up. While it doesn't fit me quite right it is still a valuable piece of gear in my eyes. I've had the jacket now for about 6 weeks and I have have used it in the mountains and on the river in the Jackson Hole area. It has kept me warm and is breathable. I ended up getting pretty wet rafting one day and even though it had basically soaked through, this coat still kept me warm. The seam that connects the hood has already started to come apart. I'm hoping this coat proves to be more durable than I am so far noticing. I haven't put it through the ringer at all and a seam is busting....

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Put through the wringer. Amazing jacket Chilly days in the Red River Gorge, tough ice climbs in New Hampshire, Dirty cracks in Colorado. Sitting on route in a harness for hours on end taking photos got cold sometimes in the winter. but the first light was perfect when I wasn't moving and wasn't to hot when I was jumaring up my line. This jacket went through it all with me. Very warm and light jacket. Would definitely recommend over any other Synthetic jacket on the market. Even a few down ones.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One Jacket to Rule Them All I don't normally write reviews, but this jacket is simply amazing. I have a closet full of jackets for all the subtleties in weather conditions and this one immediately became my go-to for a wide range of conditions. Here's why: - Super-warm but not bulky: I can wear this jacket on top of a t-shirt and am comfy in 30 degree temps if I'm moving at all (i.e. walking the dog). It feels as warm as a puffy but is form-fitting and doesn't feel bulky or restrictive. It has a nice "layered" feel. - Sheds light precip: I can't speak to how it performs in a full on rain storm, but it easily sheds light precipitation and does a good job blocking wind. - Trim fit: Finally a jacket that isn't cut for the "Average American". Climbers tend to be lean and this jacket fits trim and seems to have extra long arms. You can climb in this jacket without feeling like a marshmallow. - Looks good: Get this jacket in black and you can wear it to fancy dinners or business meetings and look good doing it. Well done, Black Diamond.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My favourite jacket for simply everything! This jacket is simply phenomenal! Lives in my pack for any summer endeavours. Whether it is backpacking for a few days or Alpine climbing, rock climbing on chilly days. It just stays in the pack until I need it. Fall / Spring. I won’t leave the house without it. I wear it or stuff it. I even bring it with me on chilly mountain biking trip (leasure or while coaching) Winter. The season that sold me for this jacket! Most of the time, I have it on. Unless it is really. Warm winter day. Backcountry skiing, running, ice climbing or walking the dog, this jacket allows you to move and adjust to a wide range of temperature. Just simply layer accordingly underneath it. Short sleeve, long sleeve, both or combined with a insulated vest, this jacket does it all. I wear it on top of a light to mid weight base layer for most days ice climbing. Below -20 degrees celsius, I use an insulated vest under. Wet pitches, I wear my BD Helio jacket over the First Light. I finally have all my layer combinations figured out after 30 years of playing in the Outdoors. Durability has been fantastic and one of the rare product I would buy again and again. One minor suggestion. Maybe put the hand warmer pockets 2-3” higher to not interfere with a harness. 6 out of 5 Thank you BD!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 100% Perfect. All my black Diamond gear (jackets) is unbelievably thought-out and absolutely perfect beyond description, and my first light hoody is probably my most versatile piece. It stretches and sheds rain and wind, with a high collar, low profile hood and draw cord waist. Everything and nothing more needed for a perfect midwieght layer, used as a midlayer or outer layer. If i could only have one jacket this would be it without question. Perfect.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Midlayer, Not Very Packable This is my go-to jacket for climbing, backpacking, and really anything else. Breathable enough to keep on during moderate hiking, but warm enough to use as a belay jacket as well. I'm somewhere between a small and a medium, I got a small and it has a slim but comfortable fit. It's also quite durable so far, I've used it almost every day for the past three months and it still looks and feels brand new. My only issue is this jacket is not very light, and doesn't pack down as small as I'd prefer. Very expensive as well, but worth the investment.
