Beacon Comparison

PIEPS DSP Sport Avalanche Beacon is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 31.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Beacon for all! Although I work as a ski patroller, this beacon is easy to use for anyone. Coming from analog types years ago it took getting use to slowing down to allow the beacon to read the path. With this digital beacon I have drastically sped up my search times and with their multiple antennas my fine grid was fast too:) only thing that needs to be worked on is the carrying case since th buckle is hard to undo with gloves and if rather just have the beacon with a good strap for the chest. this beacon also works well for multiple burials. I am stoked at its ease and long battery life in the mountains workin all day. I wear it daily and don't go out with it!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Almost perfect I got this beacon because I love Black Diamond, I needed a reasonably priced beacon that had a flagging feature. This one fit the picture. It's pretty easy to use, the harness for it is easy to adjust and comfortable. However, the part of the beacon on the lower corner that connects to the wrist strap is flimsy and, broke quickly. Along with that the sliding component that allows you to go into send or search mode is starting to stick but is still functional. All in all I am satisfied with this beacon. I personally think it's better then the tracker 3. It's an awesome beacon for someone just starting to dabble in backcountry skiing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't go into the backcountry without it! Ok, you could go into the backcountry with another transceiver, but if you're shopping around, this one deserves a serious look. Simplified functionality, good battery life and great range are some of it's high points. A large part of my buying decision was due to very favorable independent reviews of this transceiver (search online and you can easily find them). I train with folks who use all different brands (Pieps included) and the Pieps receivers all seem to get a signal much further/faster than the other brands. My only (minor) complaint is that it's somewhat tricky to manipulate the lock switch/slider while wearing mitts.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Reliable, intuitive features. Solid beacon! We've been using these for the ski patrol, and they are my top choice for a digital 3-antennae beacon with a flagging function. Everything you need, nothing that you don't. Doesn't require frequent calibration like another more complex becaon that I own, and seems to have very few spikes and pauses when searching. It's great for the beginner and pro alike. I have both the Pro and Sport, and I like them both. It's nice being able to read slop angle with the Pro, and I hope that the TX600 comes back in stock so that I can get one on my pup, but otherwise the Sport is nearly as good and should be a great beacon for anyone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Buy it I have been in the Ski Industry for 25 years and was a hold out, not ready to embrace the multi-antenna concept till I got schooled by a co-worker last year on a multiple burial drill. The DSP sport is intuitive, fast and accurate. The "flag" function makes multiple signals far easier to deal with, and Pieps has really simplified the fine grid search by removing the distracting arrows when you are within 2 meters of your target.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome range! I can only bring up two areas of potential improvement, which applies to both the DSP Sport and Pro. 1-Would be nice if AA batteries were utilized, either 1 or 2, instead of 3 AAAs. And how do you purchase 3 AAAs? BTW, Ortovox 3+ operates on a single AA. 2-Sliding switch snags a bit on the holster when its put back in. BTW, holster is very intuitive to put on. The holster also partially pushes out the beacon when you unclip and pull on the retaining strap, which is very convenient with gloves on.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from simplicity as advertized In short, Beacons are best appreciated when the operator practices using them regularly. And yes, I have always used this particular beacon during my avalanche rescue training for my search & rescue unit & for ski patrol. However, the simplicity of this design is easily a no-brainer. It's affordable & highly comparable to the other beacons on the market. I will note that I have used other brands such as the bca tracker & mammut & ortovox. I prefer this one!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Extremely pleased Bought the beacon just in time for my first Avalanche safety class. Beacon range exceeded the range of classmates' beacons by 5-15 yds, and the beacon was easy to operate. Only annoyance for me was with the harness straps (especially the over shoulder adjustment), which continuously loosens - I'm at the small end of the range. Perhaps rethreading the strap will keep it stable, or I'll tack it down with a couple stitches.
