Backpacker's Editors' Choice Award Review

First Light Hoody - Women's is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 16.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid midlayer I bought this jacket to replace my bulky fleece midlayer. It performs well as a midlayer for ski descents either in the backcountry or at the resort. This jacket is toasty warm, and I found myself sweating in it on a 40-degree bike commute as well as under a Gore-Tex layer while skinning on a rainy/cold day. It also functions well as an outer layer on warmer winter days (35-45 degrees). Sadly/happily, it has already become a go-to jacket for around-town use and errands, even edging out the light puffy. For reference I am 5'10", 144 lbs, 34D, and size medium works great for me.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Meh Pro's: Warm. YAY :) Pockets are sizable and my hands don't get stuck which happens a lot with women's clothing. Length is nice to avoid drafts. Bottom hem sits about 6" below the point of my hips. Color. I bought the green and can get away as wearing it for both work and play. Con's: Waist draw cord broke during the first week of use from just wearing the jacket, not even using the draw cord. I was walking and it fell out. Cut narrow in the shoulders. Gets tight if I move to my full range of motion. Sleeves are a tad short. Improvements to make: Wider cut across the shoulders. Longer sleeves, internal drop pockets. two way zipper. Attach the drawstring in a more durable way. About me: 5'9" 135lb. Bought a size medium. I'm fairly small busted so if you're not I'd recommend sizing up so that you can still move your arms.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than I expected I purchased this coat to replace an awesome coat that just doesn't pack down well for travel. When this coat arrived i fell in love with the color but was on the fence about the shape as my previous coat was more structured. After 10 days in snow and light rain, I LOVE this coat! I usually wore one medium weight layering shirt underneath I stayed warm without it being bulky, it looked good I stayed dry. Even though the hood is a bit large so as to fit over a helmet, it stayed on my head perfectly when I pulled it up over my toboggan. Big thumbs up here!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from a jacket for everything I've had this jacket for about a year and it's been great all year round. Lately I've been wearing it running in winter conditions and it's amazing at keeping me dry and warm even when I'm really sweating. For stop & go activities in the mountains it's been great too - and I also wear it around town alone or as an insulation layer under other jackets. The hood keeps the wind out, but isn't too tight around my face. I've sent it through the laundry cycle countless times and it's still looking and performing as well as it did when it was new!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from New Favorite Jacket I'm 5'10, 137 lbs. and ordered a medium that fits perfectly and has some room for another layer should I need it. I bought the jacket to eliminate the umpteen million layers that I tend to wear to stay warm in the winter. But also needed a jacket that wouldn't tear at the site of jagged edge as we live on a ranch. So far this jacket has not disappointed nor torn. It's breathable but also keeps a perfect pocket of warm air around me whether I'm hiking, walking the dog, working or feeding the animals. Based off of these activities alone, I suspect that it's going to be "the" essential jacket to have for when we finally get enough snow to put it to some real use. Thanks BD for such a perfect jacket; it's really all I've ever wished for an insulating layer!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Tech Jacket with for 100% Adventure I have had this jacket for over 6 months and have put it to good use...Skinning up the mountain an outer layer in windy/bone chilling cold and as an second layer under by shell. The First Light has held up to the elements. I have washed it and it recovers well (and I have the light blue and the color is still vibrant). And every time I wear it I get complements : )

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Go-To layer for winter hikes I got this jacket in September, and since then it has gone on every single hike with me. Performance: First, the jacket has the perfect balance of warmth and breathability for cold-weather active hikes. Unlike my other synthetic jacket (which was windproof), the First Light breathes exceptionally well even when I am moving quickly uphill and keeps me warm when I stop for quick breaks or head downhill. While this breathabilty means the jacket is not 100% windproof, it does block a light breeze. The combo of warm and breathable means I can keep it on for longer, and make fewer stops to adjust layers. So far, I have used it mostly in temps ranging from 30-45 deg F. Material: This is my first garment with Schoeller fabric, and wow. Not only does it repel water really well, but it also passed the blood/ dirt test... as a sometimes clumsy outdoorswoman I managed to get a gross red smear on the lovely light blue color. I was very happy when the blood smear rinsed right out with water and a clean rag. After three months of use, I am just starting to see a little dirt on the cuffs. Fit: I am 5'7 about 125lbs. The medium fits my long toso very well, and there is plenty of room under it for a light fleece or heavy base layer. I am not busty at all, however, so the extra fabric in the bust region is not ideal for me and is a little loose, but not too bad (this cut would probably be very flattering for most women, however). The one thing I wish the jacket had is a draw string for the hood. Over or under a helmet it stays in place, but if I just have it on my head it will sometimes slip down a little far. The drawcord would also give a more complete seal around my face, which would be great when it is windy and snowing. Lastly, the synthetic insulation did as promised and kept me warm even when completely soaked though. I didn't even know it was wet until I got back to the car! Looking forward to more adventures with this jacket.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Breathable warmth Whether you are out for a nippy dawn patrol tour or a blustery day at the crag, the First Light Hoody has got you covered- in breathable warmth. This jacket offers all of the necessary components of a functional insulation piece and works as a stylish urban layer for transition into the city from the hills.
