Questions
Describe
your climbing background?
I started climbing
in Joshua Tree with an electrician’s harness,
a nylon towrope and friends who were out there
for the sheer adventure of it all. I don’t
even think that’s called “trad” (and
maybe it’s called dangerous), but I’ve
felt the same sense of adventure on the bigger
climbs from Patagonia to Alaska to the Himalaya
and the Karakoram Range. I love all types of
climbing, from boulders to walls to big mountains.
Was
there a big breakthrough or defining moment for
you?
Hearing a cricket in my vestibule after making
it down from a peak that I didn’t think I’d
make it down from was BIG, because I’d
dreamt about it first. I think about it all
the time.
What
do you do when your not climbing?
Photography,
writing, running a film festival, playing music,
working.
Any
training advice or suggestions?
Train all your
muscles, not just climbing specific ones.
Who
or what inspires you?
Great music, great landscapes,
great friends and people who share their stories.
Anything
that really irks you in the mountains?
Leaving
trash, altering the environment or pulling an
attitude.
What's
playing in your stereo / ipod / head right now?
Tool right at this second, but I like lots of
music from Bluegrass to Hip Hop.
