Alpine Start Hoody - Men's is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 24.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from great versatile jacket this light and super breathable jacket is my most worn layer for ski touring, and has also become a staple for colder weather trail runs and mtn biking. It is so light and easy to pack it goes pretty much everywhere. I am 6'2"/180lbs with skinny arms and the L size fits just right over a mid-layer. It's a little flappy if it's just over a thin merino. Overall i am super happy with the jacket and most others i see out in the woods have agreed! one minor issue i have encountered is the hood won't stay on if the zipper is wide open, something that happens skinning in the wind, jogging in the rain or wearing it poncho style.. this might be accomplished with a simple snap closure in the chin area.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hits all the essential high notes Bought through curiosity to replace a series of thicker, heavier old style wind blocker jackets. It is one of the most intelligent designs and a smart example of ‘less being more, many times over’. There is ample evidence of what the designers took away, as such the battle to prioritise what was only essential is very evident. Minimal lines, Few pockets, scant pull cords and super light cloth weight give rise to a class leading soft shell. There are no illusions with this jacket’s insulation properties; they are not in the design spec. This is a true active jacket. I have so far cross country and ski toured it extensively. The moisture transfer whilst wind bloc capability is finely balanced. The hood resets perfectly with a soft but sufficiently proud visor. Simply clever. There is nowhere else to go with this design. This season’s find for me.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good piece in many ways, but a few issues. THE GOOD: 1) Very lightweight fabric with a high quality feel. 2) A quick vader test (blowing through fabric) suggests a good balance of air permeability and windproofing. This was my main reason for buying, as the CFM is too low on my current windshirts, leading to overheating during aerobic activities. 3) Good zips with a quality feel and action. 4) Big hood (I have a large head and helmet compatible hoods are the only kind that don't feel restrictive to me). 5) In smoke colour (dark grey), the logos and branding throughout are very low key and nearly invisible. Huge bonus for me, because I hate being covered in branding. THE BAD: 1) The sleeve openings are way too loose. I'd have to wear a thick midlayer and gloves to get any kind of seal there. 2) Front of the neck is uncomfortably tight and restrictive when fully zipped over a baselayer and thin midlayer. My neck is long and pretty average, and I can imagine this would be an even worse problem for guys with thick necks. 3) Positioning and stiffness of the chest pocket means that when you move forward even slightly, you get an unsightly bulge on your chest just below your pecs, like something's trying to burst out of your upper chest. I tried ironing this out, but it appears to be inherent to the design; looking around online, I now see this bulge on most fit pics. 4) A few loose threads upon arrival. I expect perfection in stitching at this price point. 5) A bit too short for my tastes, hitting just above my hips and rising up when I put my arms over my head. 6) I bought in my usual size and it fitted overall but has quite a bit of extra material under my armpits; I think this contributes to the chest bulge. CONCLUSION: I ended up returning the Alpine Start for a refund as I couldn't accept the downsides, particularly the problems with the sleeve ends, tight neck and comically bulging chest. I hope in future BD will address these issues, as I am a fan of lightweight softshells and windshirts and I really wanted to love this jacket.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lightweight softshell Just bought my second one. Love this jacket. I had a medium which I bought because I wanted a tighter fit but found that I wanted this jacket for winter as well. I couldn’t layer with the medium. Despite being very thin it sheds water well, repels wind, and is quite resistant to wear and tear. I took a friends ice axe to my side when his pack turned into me and had a pretty good welt on my skin but no tear in the jacket.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from In a new category! I have about 5 favorite softshells (out of 10) because they are often different in terms of CFM and fit for a particular activity. I don't wear them to stop rain, maybe sometimes snow, so protection against rain isn't my concern. Most of them are pretty heavy to achieve that magical very breathable but not pierced by wind quality. The ferrosi is the lightest but can be too permeable for exposed terrain in cold conditions. I often put a houdini over in gusty conditions, but the houdini, even though one of the most breathable windshirts, gets clammy. This piece weights like a houdini but feels in terms of wind control and breathability like a lower CFM softshell (e.g. Patagonia alpine guide). I'm wondering if I can use these to retire some of my heavier softshells except for heavy snow, abrasion or tearing situations. Ordered an XL to wear over in colder/windy conditions but just ordered an L to wear as a main layer to try that out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Versatile piece Light and packable this is a great layer to throw in your bag when you need to take the chill off. Great for shoulder seasons when the temp dips a bit, or you need to take a break from high output activity. Breaths well and can be left on. This stays next to my front door, and I often use it in place of a sweatshirt if I'm running out real quick. Fabric is comfortable over a T-shirt. I'm 5'10" about 165 and M fits great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Softshell In my opinion, this jacket is one of the Black Diamond's product's that it sells. It is good to see that they have kept it in the line as the protection/oz while not sacrificing on breathability or durability make this a top of the line softshell.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GREAT COAT OVERALL I bought this coat around a month ago and so far it has been amazing. This coat fits great, breaks the wind, and sheds water great. I wear this coat daily and it hasn’t gotten a single tear, although the fabric may seem thin. This is a perfect weight and packs great into my backpack. No doubt this is a 5 star coat.
