Speed 30 Pack is rated 3.5 out of 5 by 17.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Bad lid I went with this backpack to Mt. Elbrus along the route from the south. On acclimatization routes, it was also with me. The backpack has a durable fabric. It fits comfortably on your back. The main disadvantage of the backpack is its lid. If the backpack is not completely filled, then its lid is not on top, but hangs in the back.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Good pack ruined by the lid The good: Pack carries comfortably for me. Frame is nice. No metal, it's a plastic/foam sheet, so fairly flexible but supportive and keeps cam lobes from poking you in the back. Durable, material seems pretty waterproof, packs well, can be overstuffed. Really, the quality you expect from BD gear. The bad: I have one gripe with this pack and it ruins the whole pack for me. It's not about the quality, but a design flaw. If your pack isn't stuffed full/overstuffed, or if you have anything heavy in the lid like bars or a headlamp, the lid will below the opening and allow dirt, debris, spindrift, rain into your pack. No drainage at the bottom means if it rains on you, you end up carrying a few extra pounds of rainwater in the pack! I didn't find out about this feature until I was back at the car with my gear all soaked. Since then, I've also found my gear buried in spindrift and sand. It's a huge pain. It can be remedied by closing up the spindrift collar to an extent, but this makes accessing gear with gloves hard. I've not used any other packs with this issue. Don't know how this huge design flaw was overlooked. Otherwise love the pack, but I hesitate to use it for the big days I bought it for because at some points its like carrying an open bucket on your back. Some other companies have handled this issue well. A flap of nylon is sewn from the back of the lid, to the back panel. It still allows overstuffing, but the nylon flap covers the opening if the lid sags.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Functional Pack - Yes; Its effect on clothes - No As a functional pack - it's great. However, the effect the shoulder straps and back have on clothing - oh no. The pictures I've attached are of a shirt after one use with the Speed Pack - notice the blacking on the shoulder strap areas and on the back. The shirt has also been washed since - no change in the stains. This is just a shirt, if this happened to a shell, I would be much less happy. I've gone so far as to wash the pack in *detergent* with the hopes this stops. If not, I have to go back to my NF gear. I really wanted this to be the one. But now, I'm just not sure.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Problematic Lid I want to love this pack but I can't. The top lid is the main problem. If the bag is less than full, the top flap falls down the pack exposing the spindrift collar and internal frame. You might think you'll keep your pack full but probably not always. If I have a a jacket in the pack and the lid is working nicely but then take the jacket out to wear it, then the bag is not full enough and the lid starts acting funky. A secondary problem is that this pack's internal frame catches on branches while ducking under them on a bushwhack. The suspension system is great and the pack is comfortable to carry.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Speed30 Bought this pack after borrowing a friend's old speed40 and loving the design. I like this pack but the top pouch sags and shifts around awkwardly when the main compartment isn't full. Other than that: it does the job. No frills.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best alpine pack I’ve used this pack for overnight ski tours, alpine climbing approach and on route, waterfall climbing approach and stripped on route. The fact that it’s made to strip out the frame sheet, top flap, and waist belt makes it super versatile. I really like the swing-arm shoulder straps. The lightweight fabric is durable for most everything except chimney body smearing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The perfect cragging pack I use this for both trad and sport cragging (generally only single pitch). I think it is the perfect pack for this because of the size and climbing specific features. It is easy to attach a rope to the top and the ability to overfill it a bit and raise the lid is very helpful. Mine has held up very well to a lot of use too.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good features and very usable Bought about a year ago. Used for ice climbing and single day Alpine climbs. Sturdy bag that stands up to abuse so far. Great ice tool and crampon attachment options. It’s a modular pack with straps that can be taken off if not needed. I recommend this pack for single day longer ice climbs or alpine climbs.
