Wasatch Classics: Skiing the Y Couloir with Noah Howell

Helio Recon 95 Ski is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great sticks Bought these for a light set up. Great ski so far. Will have to see how they hold up before I can say how durable they are. So far I love them

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Life Changing. Stop and Buy Them. Most reviews leave out context which makes decision making difficult, so I'll include short background. I started skiing last year so in no way a pro. That being said I've been an alpine climber for +15 years and traveled all over the world doing so. I am no stranger to mountains, fitness, and learning curves. I picked up skiing quickly and split my time 50/50 in bounds and backcountry. Inbounds I'm found at Alta and Snowbird. Backcountry mainly in the Wasatch but also in PNW. I've been skiing 106cm and 112cm skis the past 2 years. I decided to try something thinner and chose the Helio Recon 95 because I love BD and was sick of looking at a million other options. BD put Atomic Shift bindings on them which is all I've ever used and like them. Not sure if the instant improvement was from a thinner waisted ski, a deeper sidecut, more aggressive camber under foot, or a combo of all 3 but I was finally skiing how I imagined I should be the past 2 years. Turning was simple. I am actually carving with no washout. Keeping speed through the trees. Easily dumping speed when I need. Confident with my upper body pointing down the fall line. My skis are finally doing work instead of me trying to control my skis. I hucked a few small cliffs and stuck the landing feeling surprisingly stable. Straight lined mogul fields for the first time with complete control. Oh, and speed.... Clocked 60mph and skis were stable. I was so stoked, I toured 3x and night skied at Brighton in a 24 hour period. 14" of powder was no problem. I wasn't floating on top but my form was much better and enabled a smooth bouncing flow through pow. Uphill, these are heavier than my DPS Alchemist 112s with Shift bindings but hardly noticeable if fitness is up. Toured up Peak 10420, USA Bowl, and Flagstaff. These skis carved up hard pack with no chatter at speed, spring corn was a pleasure, and powder was oh so good! If you've fallen into the ego trap of super wide and super tall skis BEFORE you've mastered foundational skills, do yourself a favor and get the Helio 95 Recons. These planks RIP! PS: SLC BD Team is always 100%!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Solid Ski I grabbed a pair to replace my Warrants from about a decade ago. I demoed some other popular brands that are getting lots of gear awards, like the Nordica Enforcers, but was not impressed with their maneuverability and range of conditions. Nothing else can handle the variable conditions like Recons or Boundary Patrol. The Recons are outclassed by purely powder of a purely groomer skis, but nothing does better as an all around. They can handle the super icy conditions, the groomers, the chop, and the powder quite well. I think they do best in chop and powder and fine on the groomers. They don't carve hard in the groomers, but that's ok. My biggest problem is all the ski resorts closed only weeks after I bought them!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Skis I have been on these for a few weeks now and done 6 or so days and they are awesome so far. They are light on the uphill but so fun on the downhill. Really stable and hold an edge really well. They go side to side really fast.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great ski in the backcountry I bought these earlier in the winter and they have been in a great ski here in the Canadian Rockies

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a balanced ski First ride on the Helio 95 Recons was after a warm day followed by some cold temps. They proved themselves to me on the icy piste!! Very firm and predictable ski, great at speed, and turned amazingly quick. Got this ski for uphill at my resort and skiing down, along with some backcountry touring. I gotta say I love it so far!! So happy with the performance!! Lively, snappy, quick, and solid!! Thanks BD for the great ski!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hard pack beast Perfect all rounder, beast for high alpine missions, super light yet very stabile on hard pack.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Variable snow dimensions I purchased these because they are made in Austria and have the perfect dimensions for the one quiver in variable conditions, quicker edge to edge compared to its 105 sibling, yet with enough flotation for those days. It isn’t very shaped so it’s a bit smoother with catchy snow, and moderate camber helps with hard to soft snow transitions.
