DescriptionExtremely compact and powerful, the fully redesigned Black Diamond Ion headlamp packs 100 lumens of power into a tiny package for just-in-case lighting and fast missions. With a push button housing that lets you easily switch from full power to dimmed, strobe or red night vision, the Ion has the functionality of a bigger light, with none of the extra weight.
- One DoublePower LED emits up to 100 lumens on max setting
- Modern touch-control housing runs on two AAA lithium standard alkaline batteries
- Settings include full strength in proximity and distance modes, dimming, strobe, red night vision and lock mode
- IPX8: Waterproof—Tested to operate up to 1.1 meters underwater for 30 minutes. If submerged, water may enter the battery compartment and it will still operate, and it should be dried out completely afterwards.
Ion Headlamp Brightness Memory
Ion Headlamp is rated out of 5 by 28.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Nathan from Redesigned and AWESOME The new Ion headlamp fixed some issues that really bothered me with my old Ion light. My old light cracked and Black Diamond sent me a new one that is WAY better than my first one. The customer service and warranty are awesome with Black Diamond. It’s always good to know a company will back up their products and take care of you if you have any problems. Cheap companies will NOT take care of you! It is worth it to pay more money up front and have confidence in the company you choose to do business with. The new light features a better program on the user interface that stores the last light intensity setting so I don’t have to go through and set my desired brightness level everytime I turn it off and on. The old one bothered me because it always turned on at a preset brightness and then I would have to fine tune the level to my desired setting. The new light has an independent light diffuser for the red LED that is much better than the old setup that incorporated the red LED under the same diffuser as the main white LED. The maximum brightness on the new red LED is many times brighter than the old one and it goes very dim as well. The new light has a tactile push button instead of the old swipe style. While the swiping technology of the old version was interesting, it didn’t work when I had gloves on and I had some issues with it in cold wet weather while bare handed as well. The new one has a single push button encased in the rubberized casing. This new light is absolutely awesome! It is very lightweight and very bright. I get good battery life out of it. As with the old Ion, the new Ion light has a lock-off feature that prevents unintended battery drainage when not in use. There is a good range of vertical angle adjustment to direct the lightbeam where I want it. It’s goes far enough down to eat dinner around a campfire and not blind others. The only thing I would change in the next generation of the Ion headlamp is the addition of a feature that allows users to check the battery level. For example, when the light is off, I would like to press the button for a period of time and have the red LED blink at me once for every 10% of battery life left. This feature would allow users to make an informed decision on whether to take fresh batteries or change them prior to a trip.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Merlin from Bought it for the price - love it for the features Bought the first one for the price and it has since become my preferred headlamp. Small size, uses two AAA batteries, power lock so it doesn't turn on in the pack, has red led, and dimmable main light. Intuitive single button. Mainly used for night hiking. I tend to use it dimmed down and it easily lasts from dusk to dawn on one set of batteries.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Zachary from great everyday headlamp I keep this little guy in my everyday backpack. The orange color makes it easy to find. I can easily switch between white and red lights. The battery is easy to change. It is comfortable, compact, and lightweight. I have a few of these for myself and kids.

Rated 3 out of 5 by stiff_stanchion from This headlamp could not hold up to running I bought this about 8 months ago. Lasted for about 400 miles of pavement pounding. The hinge system, with ratchet style position lock, could not hold up to repeated running. The constant up & down forces during running resulted in broken hinge. I got by for the last hundred miles or so with super glue but it ultimately failed.

Rated 1 out of 5 by Debb from Button is ridiculous First day of use and the headlamp doesn't work. I've tried holding 4 s to unlock. I've tried pushing single time, double, triple, one second, two second. Nothing. It worked for about 1 hour, then this. The light just flashes and turns back off again. What a waste of time!

Rated 1 out of 5 by Drew from Sweet little sub 2 oz lamp, but not waterproof After having 3 of these things leak, and from sweat, not even rain, I find it hard to believe that others aren't having the same problem. It's too bad, because the ION is right in the sweet spot of weight, brightness, and burn time for me (I'm a long distance hiker). I'd appreciate it if you'd forward my email to the product manager for the ION. It needs another redesign, this time with an effective moisture seal.

Rated 1 out of 5 by Blake from Faulty Light stopped functioning properly. The white light will turn on briefly only when holding the touch sensor, randomly, either strobe, or solid white. Battery change didn't fix the problem.
