Engineered to send in style, the Black Diamond Session combines ultimate comfort with performance features that seamlessly transitions from the gym to the crag and then out to the city streets. You’ll first notice how the shoe slips on thanks to the stretch-fit heel for easy on/off transitions. That heel also folds down with ease for slip on functionality. Then the integrated bootie wraps your foot like a sock, while the breathable knit upper regulates the temperature and stretches where you need while on the move. The tuned EVA midsole keeps you cushioned and stable, while the Black Diamond BlackLabel-Street sticky rubber adds grip for approaches or commutes. Finally, webbing loops provide tagging or stowing options for trails that end at the cliff.

  • Durable and premium breathable knit upper
  • Black Diamond BlackLabel-Street sticky rubber outsole
  • Rubber toe protection
  • Super comfortable molded EVA midsole
  • Comfortable sock-like bootie fit
  • Collapsible heel for easy use at the gym or crag
  • Elastic heel strap for easy on/off at the gym or crag
  • Webbing loops for various tagging options

Session Approach Shoes - Men's is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 47.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from No hood on slab I do love the light and comfort that this shoe provides, however much of the “approaching” I do involves slab, the stretching heal is not helpful. I pull out of this shoe more often than not. However, for hiking out to a crag and easy on/off this shoe is great.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great Shoes- Just not sure what to use them for? These are what they say they are: Super sticky rubber with style for days. The fit and sticky rubber are exceptional! I just cannot figure out what to use them for. Great friction and decent edging; I can easily climb intermediate routes in them, but why would you? They don't have the support needed for anything more than a parking lot approach (so a poor approach shoe), and I'm still going to throw on my climbing shoes if I wear these to the crag or gym... They could be a great option for working at the gym or single pitch guides who want a comfy shoe they can climb in if they have to. Super light - so maybe an alternative to chacos for that multi-pitch hike off? Imagine your Adidas Samba / indoor soccer shoe with sticky climbing rubber. Fit was true to size when compared with running/street shoes. As someone else noted, the slip-on/stand on heal feature is neat but they don't stay on well in that mode.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Lightweight and Easy on/off These shoes are awesome. Lightweight and stretchy and breathable. Wish there was just a bit more cushion in the sole. Great crag shoe that is easy to get on and off and just really cool looking. Big fan of the black / gum sole.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great shoes, but they're not approach shoes... I bought these shoes to have something I could quickly change into while belaying. They're great for that purpose due to the collapsible heel, and I also wear them around town since it's easy to put them on with the stretchy heel. I also carry them up multipitch routes to have something for the walkoff as they are very light. However, it's best to think of them as tennis shoes with a collapsible heel rather than technical approach shoes. These perform no better than tennis shoes in technical terrain, and I would not climb in them, not even 4th class terrain. If you actually need to do serious scrambling or "approach"-ing, wear some actual approach shoes.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Good ideas, but unfortunately unusable. I've worn these many times up to the local crag which is fairly steep but less than an eighth of a mile hike. Initially they seemed pretty awesome, albeit very narrow in the toe box (the sides of my feet actually overhang the soles of the shoe) but the upper is stretchy so it kind of worked and they slip on easy. Then, after a few short approaches, the heel slingshot just kept getting looser and sloppier. I actually had both shoes just come off, as in my feet just slopped out the side, while climbing a low angle slab leaving me trying to get them back on while also trying to not slide down the rock in socks. This extreme sloppiness of the shoe has resulted in them completely coming off my feet many times on simple terrain. Basically, on anything more than a level sidewalk these shoes are useless. I tried the obvious and cinched down the laces as much as possible -- this didn't improve the performance and merely made them more uncomfortable. The shoes are also the correct size, my toes nearly hit front of the shoe. Perhaps others won't have this issue, i obviously can't say. But my personal experience has illustrated that they are unsuited for their job as approach shoes and honestly can't even handle mild uphill. The good: Appear well made, are stylish, sole rubber is sticky and durable, fairly comfortable, almost slipper-like. The bad: Very narrow. Heel is super sloppy and inadequate to keep feet inside shoe on less than level, flat terrain. Cannot function as actual approach shoe.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid even as an everyday shoe Bought these for more or less the intended purpose: far better for approaches than sandals, just as comfy when belaying or having a post climb beverage. Then I broke my collarbone and a global pandemic came, so these ended up becoming my “wear everywhere” shoes. They’re perfect for it! Look appropriate for just about any situation in these days of not going to an office. Super easy slip on, pretty sturdy for what they are, and haven’t shown much sign of wear and tear. I’m not where close to the point of having to replace them and am already considering a second pair just in case BD gets any ideas of discontinuing the color or not stocking my size when it does come time to replace.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Narrow Toebox: No Wide Options I bought these and had to return (pay return shipping) and customer service was not helpful. No options for wider.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super lightweight approach shoes Few weeks in with these shoes and love the breathability and quick slip on style. I might ditch the laces. Probably not for an all day sharp rock ridge grind, but if you want good performance out of something the same weight as flip flops, the session shoes are great
