An ultralight powder ski with the chops for serious technical lines, the Black Diamond Helio 116 ski eats up deep snow far from the trailhead. Thanks to its redesigned pre-preg carbon fiber layup and ABS sidewalls, the Helio now has improved dampness for a smoother ride. The Helio 116 is light enough for remote expeditions and 10,000-foot days, with the torsional stiffness and smooth flex needed to charge through deep pow or variable crud. Early rise in the tip and tail improves flotation and trail-breaking efficiency, and an ABS tail protector also has an integrated skin-clip tab to keep your skins secure.
  • Floaty 116-mm waist with early rise tip and tail
  • Redesigned pre-preg carbon fiber layup offers improved damnpness, torsional stiffness and balanced flex
  • Ultralight engineered balsa flax wood core
  • 5 mm beveled ABS sidewalls
  • ABS tail protector with integrated skin-clip tab
  • Optimal use: 90% soft snow/10% hard snow
  • Mounting with telemark bindings is not recommended

Helio 116 Carbon Ski - Past Season is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent My first carbon ski ive had. Skiied over 100 days in AK on these until i lost one in a slide, I hope it melts out this summer! But, I love these skiis i would pair them with a lightweight binding because a burly one (shift type) would be overkill. These are an ultralight 116 ski. Perfect for all round Alaskan backcountry. These skiis charge well and are quite playful with a stiff tail. They shine the most in powder tree skiing IMO. They ski well on big faces (35°+) but they do have a speed limit and like any carbon ski they can have some chatter on hardpack or high speeds. But for a 116 ski at this weight they ski very well. I do wish BD made them in a longer length. For refrence, im 6'3" and 200lbs and had the 186mm and no issues with the 186 length. Id be interested if BD made a 130ish waist ski similar to this though.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Best Ski I've owned I've been skiing professionally for 20 years and I have tried 100+ skis. This is my favorite backcountry ski ever. First, it skins really well. The tip will raise above the snow at every step effortlessly. This is not true with every skis in the Helio line up (see my 105 review). This is such an energy saver. On the way down, it is pure joy in powder where it really shines. It makes it so easy to ski big lines for such a light weight big ski. It also skis really good in an array of conditions found in the backcountry and it's an easy choice for me in all but hard pack conditions. Obviously being so light does create limitations and you will not charge as hard on this ski as you would on the Boundary Pro 115. The Helio 116 does mange vibrations quite good and it is not bounced around easily for such a light ski. For a true backcountry set up that focusses on great skiing and tours really good, this is quite hard to beat. For me this is a true backcountry set up and I don't ski it on the resort as I feel it's a bit too large for hard pack, groomers. It still ski fine and I can rail turns but my knees feel it at the end of the day. Note: I'm a telemark skier and I've mounted this ski with the Meidjo Binding. This is not recommended by Black Diamond and will void your warranty. This Meidjo also have the Alpine heelset so I've skied the Helio 116 both telemark and alpine. Note: I've tried 2 sizes. I was fun in a shorter size as it would turn really quickly in the trees but I went back to my normal size and it was better all around, especially in harder snow conditions, providing more stability and predictability. I'm 6'1 and 200lbs and ski the 185cm

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for the soft Had them out 67 days so far and can confirm what the others have said- careful about the top sheet, they chip and delaminate easily. Excellent, amazing, incredible in the soft. Deceiving for how light they are. Paired with the Tecton 12 they both weigh less than one of my old downhill skis. They’ll work YOU at the resort. If I could do it over I’d have bought the 105’s, and probably will anyway. They respond very well to high speeds and big arcing lines on big faces, yet still have a nimble quickness about them.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great pow skis These are great in soft snow but not stable in variable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent powder ski! I bought this in 176cm two winters ago and have absolutely loved them. they are super light, float great, and they have pretty good edge control on wind scoured surfaces. I used these as my only BC ski for two winters up here in Alaska and they handled all conditions well enough, but they LOVED powder days! If you're looking for a one ski BC quiver, I'd personally recommend the 105mm Helios, but these are a great deep snow addition that can handle variable conditions. Only thing to beware of, avoid dinging them because the laminate doesn't like it and can start to peel. It looks like BD has addressed this in their newer design though.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Off Piste Just finished my first season speedriding on last years model. Go to ski for sending it off-piste. Super light and floaty, but still manageable for its size. I wouldn't spend all day on groomers, but if you fly paragliders of speed wings, these are perfect.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from great ski mostly The Helio carbon 116 is an amazing ski. I have been working and skiing on these boards for a good part of this season and last year I got in some great tours in steep deep powder. The good; the ski is nimble in all conditions whether at the resort or in the back country, hard pack or powder the Helio loves steep fast skiing and supplies amazing stability and confidence when you are charging technical terrain. I’m 5’8’’ at 145 pounds the 176 length is perfect. This ski is a great effort by BD with one flaw. The Bad; with about 60 days on these skis the top sheet is starting to de-laminate at the tip of one ski and I imagine the second ski is not far behind. I’ve sent a warranty request figuring that this is not the first BD has seen of this problem. It remains to be seen how they handle the issue. I’m skiing on last year’s model perhaps they have addressed the problem in the current rendition. If so I can whole heatedly recommend this ski to anybody looking for an aggressive ski for the person that is seeking an agile and stable tool to tackle steep lines in all conditions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from light, playful A great ski for deep blower powder. Not what you want for packed powder but if you're out climbing early and skiing fresh snow these are the skis for you.
