A snow-climb must-have!

"Bought this ice axe to use for the first time, and used it to safely ascend slippery snow, cross an icy ridge, downclimb a snowy cliff, and control a glissade. An essential tool for snow climbs, and could absolutely safe your life in the right circumstance. My only complaint is that i wish it came with a leash/wrist strap."

raven pro ice axe

"I purchased this ice axe with the intention of using it for my first winter accent of mount Washington. i don't think i would've made it up or down without it. I got a 70 cm, it was the perfect size for me. its light weight, durable and most importantly does its job extremely well. its lighter and more aggressive than the standard raven. its an axe ill probably be using for a while but tbh between the standard raven and raven pro there isn't a huge difference other than the ones I've mentioned so if you're trying to budget the raven is also a great option."

Jack of All Trades

"This is a solid all around axe. It is lightweight, has good grip, arrests well in favorable conditions, and mine has been quite durable. The design allows it to still plunge efficiently, despite the slight curve. I prefer a size a bit shorter than the measurement from the ankle method. The shorter shaft is easier to handle on steeper inclines."

"It’s exactly what I needed for mountaineering especially on glaciers, snow ascents and loose rock slopes."

Light and durable. Just what

"Light and durable. Just what I needed for my last mountain trip."

Very comfortable axe. Spike is irresponsibly sharp

"All around a really good axe. Curved shaft allows for better self-arrest authority to drive the pick into the mountain. The hourglass shaped head-shaft part makes for a stunningly comfortable grip - reduces strain on the fingers when splitting them around the shaft on a long day on a glacier or multi-day trek. One big downside - the spike is unnecessarily, and irresponsibly sharp. Out of the factory, it is sharpened to an absurdly pointy tip. I teach a mountaineering course and I am amazed at how many students suffer minor injuries from this design. In one instance, a minor flub from a student resulted in a significant bleed out in the back-country from this spike. I strongly recommend you grind down and dull the spike slightly before using to avoid silly injuries. A spike tip that is rounded down to 1/16" or even 1/8" will make no difference in your ability to drive it into hard snow. Having it be razor sharp has zero technical benefit aside from it "looking cool" on the sales floor. Picture included - spike *after* grinding it down. Safer, works wonderfully and still looks great."
