"Was pleasantly surprised at how effective the red light mode is on it, and the headlamp is plenty bright with good depth and breadth of coverage when hiking on trails in the dark. Was glad to have it as it definitely has comer in handy and a great upgrade over my last one from 2016!"
"Headlamp works great. I don't have another one to compare brightness to but its bright. My main thought about it is how the heck is it still a micro-USB!?!? No USB-C which means I have to remember another cord everywhere I go and it doesn't match every essentially every other modern electronic device on the market from cheap stuff to expensive. Super bummed about that."
"I have a BD Spot 400R (400 lumens), which appears to be about as bright as this one which claims to be 500 lumens. This lamp does not appear to be 25% brighter than the less expensive and lighter Spot 400, AND there is an annoying purple zone in the middle of the illuminated spot. It's not worth the extra cost."
"* Power Tap make the lamp almost unusable for me. I often accidentally touch the Tap spot, turning on blinding light * When I turn it off in the dark, the Battery Level blue LEDs on the bottom glare annoyingly into my eyes * The Mini-USB charging receptacle is tough to see, tougher to plug into * No instructions on how to adjust the headband, which I found tough to do * Enclosed instructions incomprehensible to me. Online Video too abbreviated. I had to email Black Diamond to ask for instructions * After 3 months, the Main white LED intermittently could not be turned on at all, despite full battery charge."
"USB Micro in 2026? C'mon Black Diamond. This is now the only device I use that has a USB-micro connector so I have to carry an extra cord with me if I want to charge this headlamp. Get with the times Black Diamond."
"The fault is mine - it didn't register that mini-USB and USB-C aren't the same when I ordered my first rechargeable headlamp. But I've got to wonder "Why?!" I assumed that since Europe had mandated standardizing to USB-C, this would come with a USB-C cable. Nope - it comes with a USB-A / mini-USB cable. So my sport watch, my phone, and now my headlamp would all need to be charged with distinctly different cables - and this headlamp in particular will need a distinctly different charger unless I purchase an after-market cable. Disappointing."
"The battery life is excellent. Unless I'm going on a trip for more than 5 days, no need to worry about charging. I also enjoy the array of color options for select situations and the ability to dim on any setting. The integrated battery is another perk, especially in the humid environment I'm using it in. Lamps with batteries tend to succumb to rust and corrosion quickly here and eventually fail. No issues for the Storm 500R!"
"Super bright when you need it, and good battery life so far."
"I have now purchased two of these. So far, so good."
"I wanted a rechargeable black diamond headlamp (I have a 350 lumen black diamond that takes AAA batteries as well) and this did the trick. I camp a bunch and its always nice to not have to carry a flashlight around. This has a separate toggle between the light colors, that stays put when you turn it on and off. This is handy when i'm camping with others, put it on red and stays there, you don't have to cycle through the colors. The headband is easy to adjust and the lighting features are easy to use. My only two gripes would be, needs USB-C (mine has micro USB) and the battery meter shines down on the inside of my glasses when i turn it off. Other than those two things, its a great light."
